Honda Robotics

"My view of the existence of ASIMO is to continuously seek challenges and to create something totally new...When the robot took its first steps, it was the most memorable moment."
—Masato Hirose - Executive Chief Engineer, ASIMO, Honda R&D Co., Ltd. in Living With Robots
Honda has always explored new frontiers in innovative mobility solutions. Robotics is one of the most dynamic areas of our research—and one of the most rewarding. In 1986, Honda engineers set out to do the impossible: create a robot that could walk. Two decades later, ASIMO is a full humanoid robot, able not only to walk but also to run, climb steps and even carry a tray or push a cart. Honda has leveraged some of this groundbreaking learning into the creation of working prototypes for two revolutionary walking assist devices, and we continue to push the boundaries of technology—even researching new ways to control robots by thought alone. Learn about other Honda innovations.

ASIMO

Creating ASIMO has been an exciting challenge for Honda engineers, bringing together years of research in many scientific fields. ASIMO now has the unique ability to walk forward, backward, side step, run and even climb stairs with human-like agility. ASIMO was created solely to perform tasks to assist people, especially those lacking full mobility. ASIMO can serve as another set of eyes, ears, hands and legs for all kinds of people in need, and will provide them with a new sense of independence and mobility. To get to know ASIMO better, find ASIMO on Facebook and Twitter, or download the Run With ASIMO app for your iPhone® or Android™ mobile phone.

Brain-Machine Interface

Can you make a robot do what you want, just by thinking about it? We're getting there... Honda was an integral player in the collaborative development of the world's first Brain Machine Interface (BMI) technology that uses noninvasive techniques to enable control of a robot by human thought alone—no switches or buttons. This technology will be further developed for application to human-friendly products in the future by integrating it with intelligent technologies and/or robotic technologies. Watch Into the Unknown to learn more about Honda's Brain-Machine Interface.

Walking Assist

Honda has developed two walking assist products to help make walking, going up and down stairs and crouching easier for those who can still walk on their own but who might need a little extra support. The Walking Assist Device with Stride Management System is for those with weakened leg muscles who are still able to walk. The Walking Assist Device with Bodyweight Support System is for activities requiring extended standing or repetitive lower-body tasks.

Honda U3-X

Honda recently unveiled a new experimental personal mobility device called the U3-X. Honda literally reinvented the wheel with the world's first wheel structure to enable movement in all directions including forward, backward, side-to-side and diagonally—much like human walking. Honda will continue research and development of the device, experimenting with its practical use in real-world environments. See it in action.
